It finally happened: Google has started rolling out AI Overviews on logged-out, non-personalized SERPs — which means they’re now appearing in STAT!
You’ll be able to:
- Know which of your keywords return an AI Overview
- See how AIOs are ranking on the SERP
- Get any links that may be cited in an AIO
- View the pre-expanded AIO on the full HTML SERP
- Filter for and find them in the keywords table and SERP Features dashboard
Phew!
A brief overview of AI Overviews
Since graduating from Search Labs back in May, the only way to see solo AI Overviews has been from a logged-in Google account — until now. On August 9, our logged-out, personalization-free SERPs caught their first AIOs.
Currently, these logged-out AI Overviews are appearing almost exclusively on US-en desktop SERPs and in very, very small numbers, though we did see a spike on August 14, followed by an even bigger surge on August 15.
Despite the surge, right now it’s likely that there are still more AI Overviews appearing on logged-in SERPs than logged-out, but this may change, perhaps even in the coming days. We’re also seeing a lot of volatility in the ones showing up for our logged-out SERPs — appearing one day, only to disappear the next. This is the kind of behaviour we expect to see when Google is testing a new feature or approach. Or when they have an unintended bug.
So, it’s more likely than not your keywords won’t see any AIOs just yet.
Surfacing AI Overviews in STAT
If AI Overviews have found their way to your SERPs, here’s how you can surface them in STAT.
In data dated August 9–14, they’ve shown up in STAT under our existing knowledge graph (ai) label. In August 15 data and moving forward, they’ll have their own name — ai overview, of course — and you’ll be keeping an eye out for this new vision in purple in the SERP Features tab:
You can also filter for AI Overviews in the keywords table. Simply head to the SERP Features column and select them from the dropdown menu.
Open up the Archived SERPs subtab to understand how your AI Overviews are ranking and check out any URLs that may be cited. Then give the full HTML SERP a perusal to see what they look like in their pre-expanded state.
The other two AI o/Overviews
With the addition of these solo AI Overviews, the total number of AI SERP features in STAT now sits at three!
Since the end of May, we’ve been tracking two other AI Overviews: top insights (ai) and knowledge graph (ai). These were technically the first AIOs to hit logged-out SERPs, appearing as small snippets of AI-generated content within the existing features.
Originally these were labelled as AI overviews (little “o”) vs. the big “o” AI Overviews that sit solo on the top of the SERP. However, it appears that super small distinction no longer exists and now they’re both rocking an upper casing.
What’s also changed is the amount of knowledge graph (ai) results. While the overall numbers still aren’t large, we’ve seen a big jump since we started tracking this result type.
Happy AIO-ing!
